The thenar eminence is composed of three intrinsic muscles arranged deep to superficial: opponens pollicis, flexor pollicis brevis, and abductor pollicis brevis. β€’ Opponens pollicis β†’ thumb opposition β€’ Flexor pollicis brevis β†’ thumb MCP flexion β€’ Abductor pollicis brevis β†’ palmar abduction of the thumb These core functions define thumb movement and are essential in assessment and treatment of median nerve involvement.
